If you’re looking for a car seat you’ve probably already heard about Maxi-Cosi. They are one of the market leaders in the industry, due to a number of factors – their excellent safety record, over 30 years experience, and their reasonable pricing.
However, when it comes to the Cabriofix, there’s another factor to consider – how well Maxi-Cosi have managed to make it travel-system compatible with so many of the best selling buggies. This means that, rather than have to carry around a seperate buggy and move your child from one to the other, the car seat doubles up as the buggy seat. You just attach it to the buggy frame, and off you go – no need to even wake your baby up!
But is it actually any good?
Our first impressions when we took the Cabriofix out of the box were “Wow, that’s light!” (we could lift it out easily with one hand) and “Great, it’s ready to go!”. There was no assembly required, and nothing needed to be clipped in or fitted, so we went straight on to the installation.
The Cabriofix has two methods of installation – either by seat belt, or using an IsoFix base (purchased separately) which clips into your car’s chassis. We tried both methods – predictably, using the IsoFix base was the easiest and felt the more secure, although if it is your intention to share the use of the seat between different cars it should be noted that the base is significantly heavier than the Cabriofix. The base also requires a third point of contact (other than the two chassis anchors) which is usually provided by an adustable front leg, braced against the floor, meaning that it can be difficult to use the base in the middle of a car’s back seat.
Using the seat belt installation method was relatively painless, although due to the size of the Cabriofix cars that have naturally short belts may not be suitable, as the belts may not reach far enough.
When it came to placing our little tester in the seat, the process was made easier by the use of the strap hooks, which keep the seat straps out of the way – no more fumbling around behind a crying child to pull the straps free! The straps are adjusted using a simple one-pull method, making it quick and easy to ensure your little one is safely in place. Once we’d adjusted the seat to fit our little tester they seemed very comfortable – the integrated head hugging cushion would ensure that their head remains in place, no matter how sleepy they get on long journeys. The seat also comes with side impact protection as standard, and is reassuringly robust whilst maintaining the high level of comfort.
So, on to the extras – as this car seat can also be used as a carrier and placed on a buggy, it comes with more extras than many of the seats we review. The seat handle is ergonomically designed for easy carrying, and three different positions – rocking, feeding and driving. The seat base is rounded, allowing it to rock smoothly when placed on a flat surface, but the handle can be positioned to prop up the back of the seat when it comes to feeding time. The handle also doubles as a frame for the integrated sun canopy, which is hidden in a compartment at the back of the seat. Unfortunately the canopy doesn’t stretch to give full coverage, but what is there is effective and easy to use.
So to summarise – would we recommend it?
As this is a seat aimed specifically for Group 0/0+ don’t expect to get many years of use out of it – you will need to buy another seat when your little ones get to be bigger ones. However, for the price and the range of uses the Cabriofix offers we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it. If you can also stretch to an IsoFix base for the seat then we’d recommend you do, for improved safety and ease of use.
